Q. What kinds of things go into maintaining an RV that most people don t think about? What hidden costs should I try to keep in mind?

A. Low fuel Mileage, holding tank pump out fees, parking the big old thing at national Parks and points of interest, winterizing the freshwater tank and holding tank, replacement parts when out of your area, replacement parts costs, overcrowded RV Parks, regular engine maintenance. Sort of like owning a Boat, maintenance and parts costs will be higher just because its an RV and suppliers think your rich and can afford to spend the extra cash. Don't let these things stop you, RV's are great and have more pro's than con's.

We bought an RV this past year, it got wrecked shortly after. Can we claim it as a loss?
Q. Okay we bought an RV, due to a manufacturer problem it wrecked while taking vacation. We had already made 5 payments on it at the time. The insurance company paid it off but our question is can claim it at a loss? Thanks in advance for your answers. The insurance company paid off the balance but we did not get reimbursed for the first 5 payments. We only had it 5 months when a manufacturer error caused it to crash. Luckily we did not hurt. What is AGI?

A. Only uninsured casualty losses can be claimed. Since the insurance company paid the claim only your deductible would be eligible. Due to the way that casualty loss deductions are calculated it's highly unlikely you'd have anything to claim. If the amount of your deductible, less $100, less 10% of your AGI is still a positive number, THAT is what you can deduct.

Can I drive an RV I bought on ebay back home before title transfer?
Q. The RV is located 800 miles away. I paid the deposit and will bring the balance with me. Is it legal to drive it back prior to title transfer and registration? Also, will I be able to insure it prior to these steps?

A. Some states offer a temporary title & tags for the purpose. Some dealers owners will trust you to return their plates after you get home. If not, get the documents and register/insure before you leave.
