A. The Alamo was a mission established by Spanish missionary's in what's now known as San Antonio. Ironically the Alamo was a prelude to the American invasion and conquest of Mexico in 1846. Mexico, a freed colony of Spain owned the territory later to be known as Texas. Mexico invited settlers form the American colonies to promote development. The settlers were happy to accept land grants but disagreed with Mexico in that they wanted slaves and trial by Jury as opposed to magistrates. Santa Anna was went north to put things in control. He failed. That was 1836. The Mexican American war was to steal independent Mexican territory and the newly discovered gold fields in California. Part of that effort resulted in Alcatraz has a fort… [cont.]

Q. How did loosing the Battle of Alamo help Texas win the independace?

A. It is a combination of the first 2 answers. It was Santa Anna's determination to punish the Texians in San Antonio de Bejar for defeating his brother-in law General Cos in the Battle of Bejar and taking the Mission San Antonio de Valero which made him take his army to the mission which was called The Alamo by the Mexican Soldiers who had been stationed there. This delay allowed General Sam Houston additional time to solidify his forces in East Texas. When Santa Anna ordered all of the defenders of The Alamo put to death (even those who surrendered) and then the captured Texians at Goliad were executed, the Texian foces were given two battle chants "Remember the Alamo" and "Remember Goliad". These chants inspired the Texian forces to… [cont.]

A. The American Army was at the Alamo? How strange. Somehow all the history books missed that. In 1836 some 145 men occupied the mission (church) known as the Alamo. At the time the building was a partial ruin and covered several acres. Later, reinforcements brought the total number of defenders to 189. When Mexico achieved it's independence from Spain in 1821, the northern province of Texas was sparsely populated and remote from Mexico City. To cause settlement, the government invited Americans to settle. Lead by Stephen Austin, many took the offer. By 1835 there were some 30,000 former Americans, plus some 5000 slaves, living in Texas. Concerned, the central government of Mexico, tried to accomplish three things: Free the slave, bring… [cont.]

A. The Texas Revolution or Texas War of Independence was fought from October 2, 1835 to April 21, 1836 between Mexico and the Texas (Tejas) portion of the Mexican state of Coahuila y Tejas. Animosity between the Mexican government and the American settlers in Texas (who were called Texians) began with the Siete Leyes of 1835, when Mexican President and General Antonio Lopez de Santa Anna Perez de Lebron abolished the Constitution of 1824 and proclaimed a new anti-federalist constitution in its place. Unrest soon followed throughout all of Mexico, and war began in Texas on October 1, 1835, with the Battle of Gonzales. Early Texian success at La Bahia and San Antonio were soon met with crushing defeat at the same locations a few months later.… [cont.]

Q. Please be descriptive and site your sources!

A. The Industrial Revolution had nothing to do with it. Many Americans, particularly from the southern states, moved to Texas because of the cheap land on offer and the attractive terms of settlement. By 1835, however, a growing movement for independence from Mexico had grown up, and a rebellion ensued. Like most rebellions, there were factions and disagreements among the leaders. Some 186+ freedom fighters (to use a modern term) occupied the former mission called the Alamo (named for the cottonwood trees that were fairly common in the area). There were a number of American citizens among this group, the best -known probably being Davy Crockett, a former congressman from Tennessee. It was here that this small group withstood a 13-day… [cont.]

A. Well, I've checked 3 likely sites and they don't have them yet. But, if you keep checking back on they should have them there, once they become available. If that site for some reason wouldn't have them, you could try aggielocker.com and aggieplanet.com. Both of those have a ton of merchandise as well. Incidentally, I'm your opposite. I'm from PA, but now live in Texas and have become an Aggie fan. :) Gig 'em Ags.

A. The only university in San Antonio with an intercollegiate football program currently is Trinity University which is a Division III school. Most Division III football stadiums hold about 3000 - 6000 spectators. There would not be enough ticket sales to justify the use of the Alamodome. The University of Texas at San Antonio is considering starting a football program. This school is in what used to be known as Division I-AA and given development of the program might be able to justify the cost of the dome. Normally, the Alamodome is used for NFL exibition games, the Big 12 Conference Championship Football Game, The Alamo Bowl College post season football game, And is on occasion used for the NCAA Final Four basketball Tournament (men's… [cont.]

Shouldn't the Alamo Bowl be required to have at least one team from Texas in it. Missouri and Northwestern ?
Q. Get real it's the freakin ALAMO bowl. You are wrong Robert C. the Rose Bowl is required to have a team from the Pac 10. The Cotton Bowl is required to have a team from the Big 12. The ALAMO bowl should have a team from Texas. Who said anything about the 'Horns? they are ranked way to high to have anything to do with the Alamo Bowl. I don't care if it is Trinity vs. Milsaps the ALAMO bowl should have a Texas representative.

A. In Spanish, the word Alamo means"cottonwood". These are the different types of trees that grow in this part of the state. But the Alamo was the scene of a famous battle for independence in 1836 when 187 men fought 7,000 Mexican troops. Their sacrifice helped secure indeoendence for the state of Texas.
