Why does my 2006 Corolla rattle when put in reverse on cold start?
Q. Hello! Very recently my 2006 Corolla has developed a rattle sound when I put it into reverse on a cold start. The minute I shift into Drive the rattling stops and I've tested the Reverse gear after driving the car for a bit and it's fine. I'm not sure what's wrong as I've just had my car serviced (oil, etc) last month. Should I take it in? Any suggestions would be very helpful!

A. Sounds like you have loose mountings somewhere. Maybe they were warm when they were tightened & when they cool down they slacken. After driving for a bit, they heat up again and expand, stopping the rattle. Just my $0.02 worth.

A. I've sold Tundras and Silverados. Your truck is the last year of that body style and absolutely has the bugs worked out. It doesn't have the best turning radius but other than that and looking different, it's a winner. Check out a Consumer Reports or Edmunds online. The proof is in the pudding. These Tundras have less problems than all other makes. As far as towing and payload capacity, they aren't the clear winners, but to answer your question about reliability, it takes the gold.

A. If it has the standard GM remote, there should be a button on the top with a curved arrow. First ensure the car has been remotely locked. If it has been remotely locked a double click on the curved arrow key will cause the car to start.

A. This is normal the new auto starter system is set so that it tries to start for a set number of seconds. Every once in a while the system just has a hic up and the car does not start as fast as normal. You are fine. My Aztek does the same thing 1 out of 100 starts it tries to start harder than the other times.

A. look on the back of the key. you'll find a small phillips head screw at the bottom of the back by the metal key. remove that screw then simply pry the case apart at the bottom using your fingernail or a small screwdriver blade. the case with then separate in two and the battery is can be removed. most Honda dealers will change the battery for you at no charge if you buy the battery from them you'll find the picture on page 85 of your owner's manual if you have one. hope that helps as a note, there should be a red LED on the top of the remote that comes on when you press any of the buttons. if the light comes on, the battery is OK. if it doesn't then its time to repalce the battery. hope that helps

Q. I had defaulted student loans in 2006 so the govt took my whole refund in order to help pay off my student loans. Well my loans are no longer in default and I know there's a place for student loan interest to be taken off of your AGI but I wasn't sure if I could claim this amount or not. I know the money that I have paid off to get them out of default I can claim but I'm wondering about the money that the govt took. And if so where could I find some info on this subject, I've looked high and low and the irs. gov website doesn't really give you a clear defition of what counts and what doesnt.

A. sorry, but you can't deduct the refund that the govt took at all. Federal refunds can't be deducted anyways, and state refunds are taxable on the federal returns if you itemized the previous year. And if they took the refund to pay the loan that you defaulted on, loans themself are not deductible, just the interest on the loans.
